Univ. of New Hampshire, Faculty Position, Occupational Therapy

The Department of Occupational Therapy invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position to begin August 2009.  Candidates with a foundation in occupational science and a defined research program are encouraged to apply; those seeking senior and junior positions will be considered.  The position affords an opportunity to facilitate the continued development of the departmental research agenda as well as integrate teaching with research and service. The Department of Occupational Therapy is part of the College of Health and Human Services, a dynamic unit in a research-intensive, liberal arts, land grant institution. 

Responsibilities: a) Implementing a defined program of research at UNH; and b) Teaching undergraduate and graduate coursework in a program that awards a BS in Occupational Science and an MS in Occupational Therapy.  The amount of teaching will be dependent upon the external funding supporting the faculty’s research. Other responsibilities include advising students and providing community, university, and other professional service. 

Qualifications:  Candidates must have a research doctorate in occupational therapy or a related field, a record of effective teaching, and an established research program.  They must demonstrate an orientation towards occupation-centered practice and an ability to work with individuals and groups of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, disability, and/or ethnic backgrounds.  Preference will be given to candidates with university teaching experience, expertise in geriatrics, and a well-defined, fundable program of research. Those with other areas of clinical expertise will be considered.

Assistant Professor, Cultural Anthropology, Univ. of Wisconsin-Stout

The University of Wisconsin-Stout, a fully accredited and career oriented institution located in western Wisconsin, 60 miles east of Minneapolis/St. Paul, with a student population of 8,800, invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in cultural anthropology commencing August, 2009.  The successful candidate will normally teach 12 credit hours per semester of introductory and other anthropology courses which complement and expand the department’s current offerings; contribute to the University’s commitments to general education, diversity, globalization, and a program in Applied Social Science; and collaborate with faculty across disciplines in conducting applied research in business and industry, non-profit, and/or government sectors.  Also conduct scholarly activity, pursue external funding, and be responsible for professional service including committee work, student advisement, and course and program development.

Postdoctoral Fellowship, Anthropology, University of South Florida

The Department of Anthropology (http://anthropology.usf.edu) at the University of South Florida is among five departments participating in the university’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Pilot Project in the Social Sciences and Humanities, 2009-2010.

Applications are invited from anthropologists to join the department in Fall 2009 for one year, with the possibility of renewal. Applicants must have completed the doctorate no earlier than 2005, and no later than May 1, 2009. They will be expected to contribute to USF’s current strategic initiatives, which include global literacy, interdisciplinary inquiry, and community engagement. USF doctoral graduates are not eligible.

The USF Department of Anthropology is a national leader in Applied Anthropology, and will give preference to candidates whose research has applied or policy potential. Current faculty research focuses on six general areas of strength: Biocultural Dimensions of Health and Illness; Archaeological and Material Culture Studies; Community Identity and Heritage; Communication, Representation and Education; Global,  Sustainable Resource Management and Economic Development;  Constructions of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender. The successful applicant will work with  faculty in one or more of these areas, pursuing her/his own research agenda and teaching one class each semester. We are especially interested in applicants who might develop graduate seminars on topics that complement existing offerings.

Assistant Professor, Washington University in St. Louis

Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant Professor to be jointly held in the Department of Education and the Center for Applied Statistics, in the College of Arts & Sciences.  This hire is part of an Applied Statistics initiative in Arts & Science.  We seek scholars who study education, broadly defined, and have strong skills in the development or use of cutting-edge statistical methods.  The successful candidate will also have well-defined theoretical and empirical interests in the field of education.  Candidates are encouraged to apply from any relevant social science discipline (e.g., sociology, economics, political science, education, anthropology, criminology, law, or psychology).  Individuals whose interests support the Department’s strength in urban affairs, from a national or international perspective, are especially welcome.  Teaching responsibilities will be divided between the Department and the Center, both housed in the new Seigle Hall on the main quadrangle of the Danforth Campus.  Research responsibilities include conducting and publishing scholarship in quantitative social science disciplines related to education, statistical methods, or related fields, and applying for external grants.

Northern Michigan Univeristy, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Tenure Track

Northern Michigan University’s Department of Sociology and Social Work invites applications for an anticipated full-time tenure-track, assistant professor in archaeology to begin in August 2009. NMU seeks a broadly trained, four-field anthropological archaeologist for a tenure track position beginning in the fall of 2009. Minimum requirements include a doctorate in Anthropology, completed by August 2009. There is a strong preference for candidates who have a commitment to undergraduate teaching, as well as professional work experience in indigenous cultural resource management and archaeologically-oriented heritage management studies with First Nations communities.

Other preferences include: expertise in the archaeology and physical anthropology of North America and the Great Lakes; and the ability to teach introductory archaeology classes, introductory physical anthropology, ethics and cultural resource management, and archaeological theory and method.

  • Understand target audiences' needs and other motivating factors that drive behavior and develop key insights and frameworks to help clients and design teams respond to the work

Sociocultural Ecological Anthropologist, University of California, Santa Barbara

The University of California, Santa Barbara, Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track position in sociocultural anthropology at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2009. We seek a social scientist specializing in ecological and/or environmental anthropology. The successful candidate’s research focus may be in any area of ecological and/or environmental anthropology, including human/environmental relationships, equity and climate change, political ecology, environmental justice, and human rights and the environment. Other topical approaches are open, but research must be empirical with sound theoretical foundations. The successful candidate must have an active program of field research. Geographical area of specialization is open but interest in Oceania, Asia, Africa, or Latin America is preferable.

The successful candidate must demonstrate ability to teach the lower-division introductory course in sociocultural anthropology and upper-division undergraduate courses in areas related to the candidate’s specialization. The ability to direct graduate students and to contribute to graduate training in sociocultural theory and in research methods also is crucial.

Ethnographer/Environmental Analyst

EDAW, Inc., a national and international leader in resources management, environmental planning, urban design, and landscape architecture, is seeking a motivated individual for the position of Ethnographer/Environmental Analyst.  

The Ethnographer/Environmental Analyst will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including specialty tasks, such as the incorporation of applied anthropological perspectives in urban planning and design, community and social impact assessments, socioeconomic and Environmental Justice analyses, as well as general planning and environmental analytic tasks. The Ethnographer/Environmental Analyst may also participate in Native American consultation and ethnographic research projects with tribes in the Southern California area and elsewhere in the western United States. The Ethnographer/Environmental Analyst will generally work with a multi-disciplinary team as a part of large projects, typically in coordination with NEPA/CEQA analyses. The ideal candidate will:

  • Be comfortable and willing to work in domestic urban and rural settings with a wide range of stakeholders that may include underserved populations, ethnic minorities, and special interest groups;
  • Have interests in applying anthropological research to master planning, urban planning, and/or landscape design;
  • Be familiar with the implications physical design may have on different ethnic groups, social/community cohesion, and local socioeconomics;
  • Have experience with Geographic Information Systems data collection and analysis;
  • Have a background in and knowledge of the ethnographic literature and cultural histories of the tribes in southern California and the Southwest and should be familiar with contemporary Native American issues.

The candidate must be personable and approachable, and have the ability to work with a large team and a variety of colleagues, clients, agencies, and tribal representatives. Light to medium travel may be required, and the candidate must be willing to relocate to San Diego, California.

Qualifications:

  • M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology or closely related field (required)
  • Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible work experience in consulting
  • Experience incorporating anthropological research in urban planning and/or landscape design projects
  • Experience working with stakeholders of various backgrounds and ethnicities
  • Demonstrated writing and research abilities

Desirable:

  • Working knowledge of Federal and State regulations including NEPA, CEQA, and Executive Order 12898
  • Geographic Information Systems and quantitative data analysis experience
  • Experience implementing Native American outreach and consultation efforts
  • Experience in cultural resource management
