Building Vocabulary Skills

The more words kids know, the more background knowledge they can bring to reading and writing tasks. How can we help our students learn new words?

  • Building a Better Vocabulary
    Strategies for adult learners.
  • Free Rice
Online vocabulary practice that adjusts to a student's skill level. For each correct response, the sponsors donate rice to fight world hunger.
  • Individual Vocabulary Lessons
Words drawn from often-taught books and plays. They include a sentence exercise, quiz, and key.
  • Vocabulary.com
Lesson plans, puzzles, word lists, and test prep support materials. Designed for teachers by former teachers.
  • Vocabulary Experiment
Master teacher Gretchen Lee set up this wiki prototype for her middle school students. It is incomplete, but you can see how it would work.
  • Vocabulary Suffixes
Students choose definitions based on their suffixes and on context clues, make new words by adding a suffix to a root word, and use suffixes to complete words. These activities are designed for adult learners but will work with middle school and above.
