Google’s $199 phone to compete with the iPhone

By Yi-Wyn Yen and Michal Lev-Ram

The Google-powered cell phone is coming soon, and it will retail for $199, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The price of the new Google (GOOG) smart phone would put the device head-to-head with Apple’s $199 iPhone (AAPL). The Google phone, which features a touchscreen and is made by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, faces some stiff competition. The iPhone 3G has generated significant interest among consumers for redefining touch-screen technology, popularizing mobile applications and significantly improving Web navigation on cell phones.

T-Mobile (DT), the first carrier that will run Google’s Android mobile software, will show off the new phone to analysts and reporters on Tuesday in Manhattan. It is expected to hit stores later this fall.

Representatives from Google, HTC and T-Mobile would not comment on the Journal’s report.

Google unveiled features of the Android operating system on an unidentified black HTC handset at a developers conference in London on Wednesday.

The HTC phone is just the first of many Google-powered phones, according to the search giant. For Google to reach its ultimate goal - driving mobile Internet use and, in turn, ads - it will need to get multiple devices in the hands of mainstream consumers. The price will also need to be right, given that companies like Palm and Samsung already offer entry-level smartphones for $100.

At&t = #1

WHY ANOTHER PHONE,ONE MORE HEADACHE..

Posted By e.firl hudson,ny : September 19, 2008 6:04 pm

As a “T” customer, was really looking forward to their releasing this phone. but what-the? Clunky pop-out manual keyboard instead of a virtual one? Crappy icon-based touch screen controls instead of intuitive built-in ones? After having the iPhone as a model for this long, I’d expect this phone to be at least on-par. Why release a 1.0 when your competiton is already at 2.0? I’m very disappointed.

For Travis D, Fremont CA

You wonder about folks hatred of AAPL; its the same as how you feel about MS

“APPL was not first to do touch, but they made it popular and cool enough for others to enter that market. Competition is good, I still want an iPhone (when they up storage), but wish Google success. I only hope MS based phones sales plunge even more.

Now let me use your quote for MS
“MS was not first to do windows UI, but they made it popular and cool enough to install on every desktop in the world.”

Posted By Richard, Fortworth TX : September 19, 2008 1:02 am

Jonathan, Chicago, Illinois : YOU are the one that is uninformed and making dumb comments. 3G NEVER costed extra, and still doesnt. What they did was re-classify it to be on a smartphone/pda plan like the rest of them devices. In fact you could have been on the $30 smartphone/pda plan even if your device was only capable of 2G. On the other side of the coin, you can get a 3G Nokia N95 with a full web browser, flash, java, etc. and still only pay $15/mo. Please get YOUR facts right, before attempting to correct someone else!

Great, now everyone can be reminded of their ugly yellow teeth everytime they make a phone call.

Posted By Dreamdeceiver, Silicone Valley, CA : September 18, 2008 9:04 pm

I don’t understand folks hatred of AAPL and saying the Google phone is so much better without even using it. Why hope iPhone collapses and fails now that Google is coming? You people do realize if it wasn’t for the iPhone you would not have the Google phone, Sprint Instinct, or upcoming RIM touch phone?! Anyone who buys an Android phone should thank Apple for pushing the limits and forcing other companies to be innovative. Like it or not, any ‘touch’ phone is a direct descendant of the iPhone. Just as most mp3 players are descendants of the iPod — for the reason that most mp3 players and touch smart phones looks eerily similar to Apple products.

APPL was not first to do touch, but they made it popular and cool enough for others to enter that market. Competition is good, I still want an iPhone (when they up storage), but wish Google success. I only hope MS based phones sales plunge even more.

Posted By Travis D, Fremont, CA : September 18, 2008 8:21 pm

It seems google has stabbed someone else in the back with this latest offering. Weren’t they just recently working with apple to integrate their products onto the iphone. Then they recently said android would be a cross-platform operating system for smartphones. WOW you not only stabbed apple in the back but every major cell-phone carrier out there. but you have now run into something you couldn’t overcome, blind apple fanboy loyalty and stupidity. It doesn’t matter how much better your products are as long as it doesn’t have the apple logo you will continue to get stupid comments like the one from stevep.

Posted By macdisser,bronx,new york : September 18, 2008 6:35 pm

No rick, the data was plan was not marked up $10 extra per month. The price for 3G access had always been 30, but original iPhone users were paying $20/month for 2.5G access. During the time between the original iPhone started selling, and the 3G iPhone started selling, Blackberry users were paying $30/month for 3G access… so get informed before you make dumb comments like that.

In Response To Please Posted By googly town,

Adsense, gmail, Google Earth, Google Maps, YouTube,Gtalk, picasa, Blogger, Google Docs, and soon Chrome will likely be one of the leading web browsers.

Google is a web application company, not a ’search’ company.

In Response to all of the “Should have gone with a carrier that doesn’t suck” people, I’ve personally dealt with almost every major carrier in the US, ATT/Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, Virgin Mobile, et al. All of them have dead zone (ATT being the worst) - they all have their problems, but the one thing that I can say about T-Mobile is that they haven’t attempted to rip me off (things like mystery charges (service insurance, AND phone insurance… what is service insurance?), providing “unlimited” text messaging (which had a real limit of 3000 messages per month, then .25 per message over… thanks ATT/Cingular.)

I’ve been with T-Mobile for going on 3 years now, and I haven’t had nonsense charges, or artificial “unlimited”ness so far.

In closing, thank you Google and HTC for choosing the only decent cell company available in the United State (I know their Finnish) -

Now - bring me my Dream!

I think its stupid that they compare it in price to the iPhone. The data plan was marked up $10 per month for the new 3g version, so its $240 more for 2 year service

There’s an old cliche very apropos for the gPhone, it’s ’stick to your knitting’ a lesson that Google hasn’t yet had a chance to learn, let them learn it the hard way, like all big companies eventually have to. Apple had to learn it, until they figured out what there knitting truly was.

The gPhone’s fail point will be a mixture of its open architecture, lack of control on hardware reference design, and inability to clearly position itself in an already overcrowded market.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Wrong carrier/Provider selected!!! Should have selected Verizon or if possible AT&T.

Posted By Sam, NY : September 18, 2008 1:37 pm

In response to the previous poster out in Santa Clara T-Mobile and ATTWS have different networks. They both use GSM as opposed to CDMA technology but they have different networks. In the past in CA and NV, some of the gsm towers were shared by TMO and ATTWS.

Posted By Erich, Sugar Land TX : September 18, 2008 1:33 pm

First, some folks are complaining about the iPhone’s/AT&T’s service or dropped calls. Well, if the Android-driven HTC Dream is exclusively on T-Mobile, it’s not going to be any better than because it uses AT&T’s network.

Second, it’s good that HTC has a lot of experience in making phones, but in looking at the pictures of this phone, it looks bulky with the added keyboard. People don’t want bulkier, they want slimmer and faster! Thus, the HTC Dream will likely provide the same level of competition as Handsprings did to Palm Pilots. In other words, it will be the ugly stepsister of the iPhone.

Posted By alex san juan california : September 18, 2008 12:40 pm

Iphone should be worried.

The threat is not from Google itself, but from all the future 3rd-party application developers who are enabled by Google’s open platform…

When the Microsoft OS vs. linux open OS in the desktop world, the former wins - due to the hugh existing customers’ software install-base. However, in this case, the cell phones do not have install-base to speak of.

Wow, I’m surprised at all the backlash against Google coming out with a phone. Are you serious? You’re against the company that continually makes EVERYTHING more user-friendly? The company that has successfully challenges so many tech companies? I guess you’d rather support a company like Apple that insists on the hegemony of its soft and hardware? Personally I like a company that caters to my preferences.

You know what I’d like to see? A commercial with PC guy, Apple guy, and GOOGLE guy. He wouldn’t be slow and annoying like the PC, and he wouldn’t be a weiner of a pompous hipster like Apple. Just a regular dude, making technology better for everyone. And best of all, he doesn’t require you to identify yourself as a PC or Apple guy. Google guy is whatever guy you are.

I have a problem with my Gphone. I downloaded an App and its working funny.

Phone Co: Its not a problem with the us, call the phone manufacturer. Here is an 800 number, good luck.

HTC/LG/etc: Its not a problem with the phone, did you call the carrier?

App Devl: Our app works fine, but I hear that Google had an issue

Google: Look we just provide the framework and search, call the carrier, they sold you the phone.

All this assumes that the phone company, manufacturer, Google and App developer have help desks and reps…

Can’t wait for my Gphone….

HTC makes ugly and hard to use phones.

Iphone is an easy to use and beautiful phone.

Apple has been writing software for years.

Google is just starting.

I don’t think the two phones are even comparables.

I bet anything that if someone uses an Iphone for a week, there is no going back.

I have known for a long time HTC is one of the most subpar brand of gimmicky phones out there… even surpassing Apple in shoddy equipment. But then again, the people who buy iPhones and Google HTC’s are the people who fall for gimmicks.

Good move for Google, terrible move for everyone dumb enough to buy one… which is a surprising amount, apparently.

HTC is a very experienced hardware OEM whom makes the Treo (past and present), Palm is the one that popularized touch-screen PDAs and Phones FIRST. HTC also makes most of the Windows Mobile phones out there including the last few AT&T high-end PDA phones.

HTC is also well known for crippling their hardware and not caring about their customers http://www.htcclassaction.org/

Posted By NuShrike, Los Angeles, CA : September 18, 2008 2:33 am

Google has a lot of cash to spend, so they may as well spend it on a phone operating system. As far as a serious competitor to the iPhone? C’mon get real.

Software:
Google is real good with web search engines. But an OS? That takes soem real skills. Google’s software is probably going to be better than windows mobile, but I clean up stuff left by my dog thats better than windows mobile, so thats not saying much. see. Apple on the other hand is fundamentally an OS company, so I have to give this to Apple.

Hardware:
HTC makes so so hardware, real cheap components and workmanship, added to fairly cursory QC. They’re the biggest because they pump out the most product, not the best product. Apple contracts the best possible hardware and is real hands on. Plus they have world class QC. Their products last. I have 15 year old macs that still run fine and are in daily use as word processors and e-mail clients. My four year old iPod works as good as the day I bought it and its loaded with tunes. My wife’s new iPod touch is a freaking jealousy mongering monster. Hardware definitely goes to Apple

Network:
The dropped call problem on the iPhone, isn’t the hardware, its AT&T’s overstrained network. They just couldn’t load test it until there was actually 4 or 5 million iPhones added to it, so it will get better very soon. That leaves us with Verizon, which is probably the worst phone company on the planet. My mom has it on her cell phone and there are huge coverage holes - this in Los Angeles County. Up north, its virtually non-existant without roaming (i.e. somebody else’s network).

No - Apple is safe for now and a few years ahead.

I have a Dopod phone made by HTC. This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever had - it turns off by itself all the time, runs out of memory (I use only phone book and took about 15 pictures). I had software re-loaded 4 (!) times by the distributor and had to fight with them to exchange the phone for a new one, which they did after 2 month of arguing. The “new” phone is exactly the same. I paid $ 600 when this phone came out and the price went down to $ 150 in one year! Never again HTC!

Waukesha, Apple may be control freaks, but they always put out the best polished products. This is what you will not see with the gPhone. More than Apple, its AT&T that bothers me, with “unlimited” data plans that are not really unlimited. If iPhone is offerred to other carriers that would be a very good thing. Having the at least the second best, gPhone available to other carriers is good thing.

Posted By Anonymous : September 17, 2008 11:19 pm

HTC is quite reliable. The touchscreen technology existed on HTC phones prior to iPhone. In fact, Garmin’s GPS had touch screen technology. All Apple did was bring the touch screen technology to the cell phone. I am keen on the Garmin Nuvifone…coming out soon too…

Honestly behave. The iPhone is revolutionary as far as portable computing devices go. That’s right, a portable computing device, that happens to have a phone. If you just want a phone go get a razor or something. Granted the iPhone isn’t perfect but it is a good couple hands above the competition and without the iPhone we wouldn’t have a google android “iPhone” competitor so be happy. Normally I love to make fun of apple but recently purchased my wife our first apple product which was the iPhone and we love it. The keyboard does leave a bit to be desired but that is more a function of my large fingers than the keys themselves and the device self corrects words for me so that makes it almost a non-issue. Personally I am a blackberry user but I can see switching to an iPhone like device if a corp can run that phone’s version of a BES. My kids have played with the thing for 6 hours blasting music with it so I don’t believe the “6 hours” story about the battery dying and I also have not had a single dropped call yet and while I don’t doubt that happens (happens on my BB as well) I think that is a good deal of exaggeration. Oh, and don’t forget, those of you complaining are the ones who bought the computing devices in the first place. So stop all the balling and if you have the cash go out and get a T-Mobile “whatchamacallit” phone, version 1.0. Oh, did I mention it was T-Mobile? We will see you same complainers back on the message boards whining about something else.

No way the experience could be as good as the iphone where Apple controls the software and hardware and apps.

I could only imagine how fast my phone would be ruined if their was no control over apps. Apple apps are fantastic, I have downloaded dozens and haven’t paid a dime.

For the person who had all those dropped calls, where are you at? I haven’t had 1 call dropped in over a year that I can remember. Also, if you have 3G iphone, did you download latest software?
