Product Description:

As some of you may have noticed, a number of Unix tools, especially file and Web servers (such as FTP, NFS, Samba, and Apache), have trouble resolving the System 7 style alias files created by the Finder's "Make Alias" command. Many of these tools think these alias files are actually regular files with nothing inside them, which makes them useless in some situations. Just about all Unix tools, however, can resolve symbolic links. Symbolic links are similar to aliases, except that they point back to the original file in a way that every Unix application can understand. Until now, however, creating a symbolic link usually involved a trip to the Terminal.

SymbolicLinker is a tiny contextual menu plugin that, once installed, allows any user to create symbolic links to files inside the Finder. SymbolicLinker does this by adding a contextual menu item to the Finder that generates symbolic links to the selected files. The goal of this product is to decrease users' trips to the Terminal in order to use the "ln -s" command.

SymbolicLinker is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed sporadic problems with new symbolic links not appearing immediately in the Finder in Mac OS X 10.4 and later.
  • Added an Italian localization.
  • Also corrected another typo in the French localization.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

SymbolicLinker ReviewWorks in Leopard Too! - Version: 1.2v2, 11/9/2007 11:50PM PST

Great little app this, saves loads of time. Does what it should and does not interfere with anything.

It works well in Leopard but when you right click on the object you wish to link, it does not appear in the same menu position as in Tiger. You have to scroll down to " Other " and there it is at the bottom.

Many thanks Nick!

I've been very pleased with SymbolicLinker for the past three months. This is a definite time saver that obviates the need for messing around in the unix shell to create symlinks.

My only small reservation, which I expressed to Nick a few weeks ago, is that links created from aliases fail when after alias is deleted. This is in contrast to how the MacOS ordinarily behaves: If you create an alias to another alias both aliases point at the original file, so deleting either alias doesn't damage the functionality of the remaining alias. I suggested modifying SymbolicLinker to point at the target file rather than the alias itself.

This strong little program keeps getting better. Thanks for providing it to the Mac community. We appreciate your effort.

Anyone who has fiddled with the CLI to create symbolic links knows it isn't all that difficult, but it isn't one of life's greatest pleasures. Here we have the opportunity to avoid Terminal altogether, establish symbolic links to large directories of photographs stored on external drives, and the uses approach the endless. One of the better truly valuable CMs, especially for non-geeks.
