Description

Nice analogy (and one I've made myself more than once) about how the USA today is in the position that Britain was at the height of its imperial power. Moreover the height of imperial power usually occurs immediately before the ignomonious collapse and ultimate handover of "most powerful country" status to a new contender. Well worth a read.

In the American case, it's a result of the unexpectedly protracted, bloody and costly Iraq war, in which a small group of foreign insurgents defies the mightiest military the world has seen; concern about the rising economic power of China and India; and a combination of imperial overstretch with socio-economic problems at home.
