and now… Opera
Finally, I can announce my big news, that I’ve keeping quiet about for what seems like ages.
From the end of this month, I will be Senior Designer at Opera Software! Like fellow UK members of the Opera team Chris Mills, Bruce Lawson and Henny Swann I’ll be working remotely.
Opera has been a browser vendor whose ideals and feature list I’ve applauded, but whose Mac interface design I’ve been, well, critical of to be honest. Now I’ve got a chance to ‘put my money where my mouth is’. I’ll primarily be responsible for Opera desktop, Widgets and Mobile/Mini browsers, but general design too. I’ll hopefully get to implement the ideas I have for the logo and branding too. I can’t wait to get my teeth into it!
My ego would love to say that I was ‘head-hunted’ for the job, but that wasn’t the case. Neither was the business failing – forcing me to look for a job. I was doing more work than ever. I simply saw the job advert, and an opportunity to do the kind of work that I really wanted to do, so I took it! I went up to Oslo in early August, and found them open, flexible, and jolly lovely fellows to talk to, with exciting projects. After all getting to work full-time on a browser? It’s a dream!
Finally, some folks might be wondering what’s happening to Hicksdesign as a company? Without going into too much detail, it’s still here. While I’m full-time with Opera, Leigh will continue to steer the ship – she tells me that she’ll be recruiting a replacement for me soon (as well as building up Hicksmade). I’ll be what is possibly called a sleeping partner. ;o)

I’m sure you’ll soon have us all persuaded to move to the next release of Opera, in place of Safari/Camino/Omnigraffle (delete where appropriate)! Or to just use 4/5 browsers daily!
Anyway, congrats.
Thierry said 54 days ago:
Congratulations! We count on you to make Opera a well-integrated browser on our Mac !
Nigel said 54 days ago:
Congrats. I’m excited for the future of Opera on the desktop. I always admired the technical team, but never use it myself because the interface is so godawful ugly, clunky, awkward to use, inconsistent with Mac software design, etc. Those are of course blunt words. But the fact you’re on board gives me much hope and means I will try it in the future rather than continue to ignore it. Best of luck, and I look forward to using the fruits of your labour.
Dan Cederholm said 54 days ago:

Best of luck!
(And remember, audio compression is your friend on the podcast!)

Awesome news! Might need to start using Opera now… looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Ole Martin Kristiansen said 54 days ago:
Congratulations, both to you and Opera! I’m a happy Opera user, but the interface is very cluttered — i’m looking forward to this!
Are you moving to Oslo?
Scott said 54 days ago:
Very nice! awesome news jon. I’ll have to use Opera a bit more now or… use it period
Grnch said 54 days ago:
It’s about time they hired a good designer!
Congratulations on the gig, and I hope that in addition to improving the Mac skin, you will do something about the hideous black-on-gray icons in the Windows skin.
If you could just make them see the light to add a bit of colour and some disctinction between the icons, as well as between their disabled/enabled states…
Thanks.
Geert Leyseele said 54 days ago:

Mike Stickel said 54 days ago:
Wow! Exciting news! Cangratulations Mr. Hicks. Looking forward to see how things evolve.
Simon said 54 days ago:
Well done Jon!
Hope you still will have time for the Rissington Podcast.
Katakumbo said 54 days ago:
Very nice! I liked Opera until 9.5. The GUI of 9.2 wasn’t Mac like and I hoped they will working on it. They did. But what they did in 9.5 is really ugly and bad.
So, can’t wait to see your work. Good luck.

Andreas Bovens said 54 days ago:
Here’s another welcome! Glad to have you on board :-)
Mike D. said 54 days ago:
Congratulations! There is quite literally no one in the entire world who is more qualified.
Dustin Wilson said 54 days ago:
Crikey! When you said that you were going to announce something big I never in a million years thought it would be this. Congratulations, and you’re a lucky booger (or bogey for you British chaps!) for being able to work from home (Or Rissington).
Talk ‘em into working on the Mac version’s interface! If it involves the skinning system I’d be more than willing to lend a hand, Jon. I’ve just hit a brick wall with my skin and the skinning system the way it is now.
Marc said 54 days ago:
Yay! That’s really exciting news, congratulations, Jon! Finally my prayers have been answered. :-)
Dustin Senos said 54 days ago:
Congrats! I’ve been following your work for a few years now. I can’t wait to see how you help transform Opera into a brand with some legs!
David Boyer said 54 days ago:
Hooray, its a win-win-win for Opera, it’s users and you! Congrats and I’m anxious to see the metamorphosis of the big O with you at the design helm.
FullCreamMilkMan said 54 days ago:
Congratulations, Jon, and good luck. Definitely the right move for Opera and I’m sure it’ll be good for you too. Time to put all that browser critique experience to good use. Oh, and the design skill too, I guess. Will this mean I’ll actually have to start using that browser? Something new for everyone… ;)
chrismue said 54 days ago:
One more reason to use Opera now. Congratulations! First things first, when do we see the making of the new Opera monkey logo? ;)
Dave S. said 54 days ago:
That’s a hell of a coup for Opera. 2009 is going to be an interesting year for browsers.
Do you get to work on the mobile side of things too?
Alan Houser said 54 days ago:
Great news indeed! Major congrats to see that you’re joining such a great team!
Søren said 54 days ago:
Lovin’ it. Opera is my browser of choice for “just surfing” and I daresay the smooth experience will even improve in the near future.
Please do insist to help with the branding, too. Opera deserves the Hicksonian touch if there ever was a browser (ofc, there already was one) to deserve it.
Scott said 54 days ago:
Congrats Jon! If anyone can turn Opera into something I’d actually use, it would be you. Hopefully you’ll get to work on the Wii browser too :)
David Vignoni said 54 days ago:
Congratulations. Opera needs some more love visually … hint hint: what an ugly old school icon they still have.
Ryan Brunsvold said 54 days ago:
Congratulations Jon, that’s incredible. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on Opera from now on.
Matt said 54 days ago:
Excellent news Jon, and nice catch Opera. Looking forward to seeing your eye for design in the browser itself. Good luck fella!
Todd Dietrich said 54 days ago:
Congratulations, this sounds like a great opportunity. First the Firefox logo, now Opera? How long until Apple contacts you to do the Safari branding? :)
Keep up the good work!
Dan Brendstrup said 54 days ago:
Congratulations on the excellent fortune, Jon. And congrats to Opera on the excellent judgement.
I haven’t used any Opera products except for Opera Mini (which I absolutely love), but I guess that’ll change now. Excited to see what you come up with!
Sharon said 54 days ago:
Oh great! Finally there might be a better looking GUI for the Opera on Mac. Congratulations on the job too!
ignite said 54 days ago:
Finally, a good reason to look at opera again. Looks like the browser wars are beginning to reignite with IE8, FF3, Safari 3, and Opera getting this big kick in the UI pants. Now if only OmniWeb could get a big kick in the UI pants.
Joseph said 54 days ago:
Awesome! Congratulations. I’m sure you’ll do wonders.
Fav Browser said 54 days ago:
Good to hear that. Looking forward to new Opera logo
Georg Portenkirchner said 54 days ago:
Congratulations, Jon!
Can’t wait to see a nice-looking Opera browser!
Glacia said 54 days ago:
I’ll incredibly excited that you’re looking at the logo design and actual browser design – two things in particular that I’ve always felt Opera needed a boost on. Would love to read about any of your thoughts on future redesigns. Congratulations!

Gil Creque said 54 days ago:
Congrats! Opera made a great move in hiring you.

Chriztian Steinmeier said 54 days ago:
That’s farking brilliant Jon!
Blaze said 54 days ago:
Wow! Congrats! Can’t wait to see what results this might bring.
Sander G said 54 days ago:
Congrats! But… does that mean we can forget the new Google Reader userstyle that you were still developing?
Dobromir Hadzhiev said 54 days ago:
Congratulations, Jon! Surprising move, good luck to you and the whole Opera crew
Glacia said 54 days ago:
Oh, btw – will you be bloging about your Opera experiences over here or on a new blog?
bruce said 54 days ago:
Welcome, John. Another one of us as part of David not Dave’s master plan to make opera British.
Oh,, and watch out for Henny — she farts.
Luke Dorny said 54 days ago:
Yay!
Congratulations!
Does this mean that the Big O will have a different look and feel? I’d say we all hope so!
Also, I’m sure this is a part of it, will the browser sites you run continue, or be handed off to another activist?
Regardless, we’re all excited for you. Working with Chris Mills will be wonderful. What a great guy!
Martin Walker said 54 days ago:
Congrats! That is an excellent piece of news and one that will, no doubt, get a lot of people looking at Opera again. Hope you can keep us updated on any big changes.
Joey Tyson said 54 days ago:
This just made my day! Congrats to you and Opera! Can’t wait to see what you do with the branding!
Johan Bakken said 54 days ago:
Congrats! I hope we’ll meet sometime you’re in Oslo.
This is just what Opera needs to become a more serious contender. Keep up the great work, Jon.
Chris said 54 days ago:
Congrats! as an Opera user who has allways lamented it’s poor Mac interface I look forward to your work.
The Logo needs a major overhall, the grey and alpha mapped shadow is in need of even a stop gap fix until a full redesign.
Even in Windows Vista some more integration couldn’t harm to make it feel more native.
Also p.s. spam in the spam folder should have a seperate setting for viewing as text only from the rest of the ‘normal’ folders.
All the best.
kL said 54 days ago:

Alan Bristow said 54 days ago:

Jon Hicks said 54 days ago:
Thank you everyone for the kind wishes!
As to whether I will blogging here or there – I shall mainly be blogging in the Desktop Team blog (http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog), but maybe some stuff here too. I still haven’t decided whether I will keep this blog opera free and start a new one for that…
The podcast will continue though!
Arve Bersvendsen said 54 days ago:
You’re truly welcome to the Opera family. I’m looking forward to you getting your hands dirty with all of the cool stuff we do here (including the twitter-mentioned friday beer).
Grégory Karékinian said 54 days ago:
Congrats and thanks in advance for some more competition between browsers.
The next couple months are going to be really exciting.
Robert Hicks said 54 days ago:
From one Hicks to another…congrats and go for it!
Frank Taillandier said 54 days ago:
After the Mozilla Firefox and the Silverback gorilla, I wonder what kind of animal are you going to design for Opera :)
It’s really a big challenge as Opera Desktop is full of good ideas as well as bad ones (please concentrate on the browser folks, it’s kinda bloated around here now.)
Anyway I feel more confident about the future of Opera with you on board.

Cindy Li said 54 days ago:
Congrats! :) Can’t wait to see the magic!
Blair Millen said 54 days ago:
Congrats Jon, a surprising move but I’m sure it’s the right one. I look forward to seeing your input.
Jeena Paradies said 54 days ago:
Cool! I was once a Opera fanboy, when I used Windows and Linux. Since I moved to OS X I had to change to Safari because the Mac version didn’t feel and behave like a OS X application.
So this news is really really great!
Cameron Adams said 53 days ago:
I’d normally hate to be comment #107, but I just had to extend my best wishes for your new role Jon. Hope you get to do everything you can dream up!
Justin Viger said 53 days ago:
I am, like everybody else, interested to see the results. It may mean switching from OmniWeb.
bgw said 53 days ago:
Sweet.
Ray said 53 days ago:
congrats John, Im sure youll make a nice shiny skin for Opera. But are you ready for the criticism? the developer community can be very critical of browsers especially the skin/look & feel.
Are you ready for the backlash?
Does this mean the Rissington merry japery has come to an end? I hope not, the world with only boagworld would be a very dull place.
Henny said 53 days ago:
Mister Hicks, welcome to the mix, very happy to have to have you joining us in what is already exciting times.
The Opera bunch are a lovely bunch, as you point out, but do watch out for the pint-size-asbo from Brum, he has Tourette’s.

nate beaty said 53 days ago:
woa! very exciting! i have long watched opera, and so many times downloaded it and tried to use it on a regular basis. it just needs help on the mac.. so close! (i am still amazed at how well Opera Mini ran on my Sony Ericsson 810i before i got an iPhone.) anyway, congrats, and can’t wait to see what comes of this. and PLEASE change the icon, haha.
Paul Lloyd said 53 days ago:
Will we be seeing a big red ‘O’, set in Johnston typeface then… ;-)
Congratulations on the move! I’m really looking forward to seeing you work your magic, espeically on the Mac version of the browser. I’d love to use their browser, but the UI and iconography has put me off for far too long! At least now there is hope!

Asbjørn Ulsberg said 53 days ago:
Congratulations! This is not just good news for Hicks himself, but much more so for Opera itself and all of its users (like myself). After becoming a full-time Mac user, I’ve startet to slowly build up a strong distaste for the whole Opera interface, including its hideous icon. Hopefully all of this will change in the not too distant future now that Jon is on board the browser company! Huzzah!
Tamil said 53 days ago:

Hans Bendiksen said 53 days ago:
Great news!!
Opera has been my default browser, and have been for years… The current logo is terrible, and the skin could definitely be nicer as well. By reading the comments here, I can only imagine the pressure you must be feeling… ;-)
Best wishes and good luck!
Eirik said 53 days ago:
This is fantastic news! I’m a former Opera employee, and if you search the mac-elektra mailing-list once you get your access, you’ll find more than one post from me where the bottom line is: Can we please hire Jon Hicks to make a new logo? :)
Hope to see you on #mac-elektra on the internal IRC-server :)

As a recent Mac-switcher, I couldn’t be happier with this news. I ditched Opera on the Mac because it looked too ugly… But with one of the best designers on board, good things seem to be coming. Hopefully with version 10 I can switch back to Opera again ;)
Christian Testman said 52 days ago:
Happy to see you join the Vikings!
Now; what about the really important challenges out there: – How are you guys at Opera going to answer challenges like Skyfire? www.skyfire.com
Best of luck,

eric_c said 52 days ago:
maybe i’m the only one who feels like this, but i actually love how Opera looks on the Mac, as it looks just like my setup on my old PC.
of course, I just converted from PCs 6 months ago and I’ve been a dedicated Opera user since 2.5.
Andy said 52 days ago:
Congrats Jon
I hope that this doesn’t mean you won’t be doing anymore of your spectacular logo designs in the future. One day when we can afford it I’d love to be able to pass our inevitable redesign your way.
Anyway, congratulations again.
Andy
Mario Estrada said 52 days ago:
Congrats, I’ve never been an Opera user because of it’s ‘ugly’ inconsistent un-macish UI, and I know that will change with you on board :).

Torbjørn Vik Lunde said 51 days ago:
I was a huge Opera fan for many years, but I got very disappointed by 9.50, and I’ve been annoyed by the very cluttered interface for quite a while.
Now I use Safari and Firefox(great icon by the way!).
However, this just made me get my hopes up for Opera again. I shall be interesting to see how you’ll contribute to Opera.
Oh, and congrats with a new job! :)
Brad said 50 days ago:
As an Opera user, this is great news. Congrats, Jon!
Desktop might be behind Mozilla and Webkit in speed, but Mini is the best on mobile. Will you get to work on the Wii install as well? Can’t wait to see your improvements.
robmcm said 49 days ago:
Great news! I have always felt the design of Opera is one of the things that have put me off the most!
Also be sure to make the hollow of the O clickable in the icon design, and stop if being off centre!! ;)
Greg said 49 days ago:
Godspeed Jon Hicks!
Dan Rubin said 48 days ago:
Well done mate! Brilliant news — I’ve been happily using Opera 9.x lately, and have been continually impressed with the browser itself over the years, but not its UI/brand. You sir will make all that bad stuff go the way of the dodo :)
Corny said 45 days ago:
Wow! I really look forward to your work in Opera. At the moment, I’m using Safari, but I’m paying attention to your blog posts about browsers for a long time. Knowing that you will work on Opera yourself makes me give Opera another chance!
