A brother of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and local Democrats who backed her unsuccessful presidential campaign socialized privately Monday with a top surrogate of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain.

The private gathering featured Carly Fiorina, Mr. McCain’s top economic adviser, and took place at the Dunmore home of political consultant Jamie Brazil, a longtime friend of Mrs. Clinton’s family who has signed on as paid national director of Mr. McCain’s Citizens for McCain Coalition.

The attendees included Tony Rodham, Mrs. Clinton’s youngest sibling, his wife, Megan, and their two children; attorney Kathleen Granahan Kane, who coordinated Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign in Northeast Pennsylvania during the primary election; and Virginia McGregor, sister of Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty.

With the Democratic National Convention less than a week away, the gathering raises questions about the support Illinois Sen. Barack Obama can expect from former local supporters of Mrs. Clinton, who dominated at the polls in the Northeast in the April primary election. Mrs. Clinton won 74 percent of Lackawanna County Democrats to Mr. Obama’s 26 percent.

Ms. Fiorina’s daylong local visit, part of a two-day bus tour of the state, was aimed at talking disenchanted former supporters of Mrs. Clinton into supporting Mr. McCain. The private gathering was not a fundraiser.

“I think there’s going to be a groundswell of support for McCain,” said Lackawanna County District Attorney Andy Jarbola, a Republican and one of the people who attended. “I think a lot of Hillary supporters are going to be for McCain.”

Efforts to reach Mr. Brazil, Mr. Rodham and a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton were unsuccessful.

Ellen Mellody, the Northeast spokeswoman for Mr. Obama’s campaign, declined to comment on Mr. Rodham’s presence at the meeting, but said Mr. Obama’s backing by Mrs. Clinton and Gov. Ed Rendell is supplemented by growing local support.

“We’re seeing huge support and momentum throughout the region,” Ms. Mellody said. “Currently, we have over 1,000 volunteers, many of which are independent Republicans and former Clinton supporters and volunteers. We expect to sign up hundreds more in the coming weeks. We have three offices open in the region, and we are opening two more shortly.”

Mrs. Kane said her presence at the gathering should not be read as a sign of support for Mr. McCain.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure. I’m trying to get as much information as I can on both of them,” she said when asked if she’s backing Mr. McCain. “I would have loved to see her as president. We still have a week to go. You never know what’s going to happen at the convention. I think she would be a fantastic choice (for vice president).”

Mrs. Kane said she didn’t read Mr. Rodham’s presence as a sign he’s supporting Mr. McCain.

“No, it definitely does not. The reason he was there was because he and Jamie are very good friends,” Mrs. Kane said. “I think that was just a social call.”

Mrs. McGregor declined to say if she’s supporting Mr. Obama but said she attended because Mr. Brazil is a friend.

“I was always a fan of Carly,” she said.

Mrs. McGregor’s appearance also is no indicator of the position of her brother, Mr. Doherty, she said.

“It didn’t mean anything,” said Mrs. McGregor, who ran Mr. Doherty’s successful 2005 re-election campaign. “I’m just a housewife. I’m a nobody.”

Mr. Doherty has publicly endorsed Mr. Obama.

Ms. Fiorina spoke briefly about Mr. McCain’s economic policies but mostly mingled with her audience, Mr. Jarbola said. About 20 people attended.

After dropping by Mr. Brazil’s home, Ms. Fiorina addressed a public event at the Ramada Inn in South Abington Township. About a third of the audience was Democrats, based on a show of hands Ms. Fiorina requested.

Ms. Fiorina peppered her Ramada remarks with references to Mrs. Clinton, an oddity considering many of the attendees were Republicans who detest the New York senator.

Mr. Brazil is a longtime close friend of the Rodham family and a friend of Mr. Rendell, who also supported Mrs. Clinton.

Mr. Rendell is endorsing Mr. Obama, although he has said he will vote for Mrs. Clinton when her name is placed in nomination at the convention next week.

Lackawanna County Recorder of Deeds Evie Rafalko McNulty, a Clinton convention delegate who plans to support Mr. Obama after the convention, lamented Mr. Rodham’s appearance at Mr. Brazil’s home for the private get-together with Ms. Fiorina.

“Poor Hillary,” she said. “You can pick you friends, but you can’t pick your family.”

Just imagine all the resistance she found in this primaries, now think about how happy will Obama supporters be with her after him losing the General election. Obama taught us how to defeat a clinton. Bet the farm that the anti-Hillary candidate will get a lot of support in 2012. Ah.. and don't count on racist voters; the anti-Hillary guy will be a white, southern, probable Mark Warner. "

" As I write this let me include a caveat that I am an Obama supporter. All that aside.....

I fail to see how a person could have supported HRC and now consider Sen. McCain for president. During the primary election there were two main points of difference between BO and HRC, 1) whether there should be a healthcare mandate for adults & 2) Whether the U.S. President should meet with foreign leaders of all states.
So how is it that rational people can now support a candidate, McCain, who opposes every major policy that HRC proposed? "

Eight years of an inept, corrupt and unlawful government, one that McCain is likely to continue since the mentality of Bush and McCain are so similar, and hurt feelings get in the way of the Clinton family. This reeks with racism more so than Hillary 2012 which would be a huge political mistake. "

" Obama CANNOT and will not win. His poll numbers are TANKING. People are sick of hearing his droning voice, his "America stinks" speeches, and his ponderous lectures. His thuggish cultists, with their heavy handed ways, are going over like lead balloons, as well. And they are noticing his flip flops, and his flubs--which are many.

The far left is annoyed at his willingness to throw privacy under the bus (FISA) as well as his scary parsing on the issue of CHOICE. Flip, flop--he wants to please everyone, and he pleases no one, and looks WEAK.

If he were a caucasian fellow with the EXACT SAME RESUME and life experience, he would have left the race before Mike Gravel did, with less money than Mike Gravel raised--and you know it. Oprah would not have leaped to his side, nor would have the two Senators from Massachusetts who IGNORED the wishes of their own constituency to pander to the African American vote.

Too many Obama supporters are so eager to "not be racists" that they suspend their judgment. This young man has a future, but right now, he neither has the EXPERIENCE nor the political judgment forged from experience to be President.

John Kennedy had almost FIFTEEN YEARS in Congress before he ran for the office. He also was a Naval Officer who was in COMMAND during wartime.

Obama was a social worker, a lawyer who never tried a case, a part time legislator and a part time law lecturer. Those are NOT QUALIFCATIONS to be President. SORRY--they just are NOT. Anyone who insists they are is a lying panderer. His resume is as THIN as Twiggy!

Obama was in too much of a hurry, he just could not wait, when he should have--now he's crashing and burning. Soon, he'll be yesterday's story, like a Pet Rock or a Hula Hoop--an old fad, a foolish fashion, like say, maxidresses, when he could have been a real FORCE FOR CHANGE, had he only not been impatient and selfish.

He should have hitched his wagon to Clinton's star--he would have been VP for eight years, President for eight. Now, he'll just be a FOOTNOTE to history, a Daily Double Jeopardy trivia question.

"I'll take Also-Rans for a thousand, Alex!"

He's a fool. His bullying supporters, though, they're worse. They refuse to believe that not everyone who doesn't like Obama is a racist. They believe we should smile and fall in love with the Empty Suit. Sorry. No Deal.

I recommend that anyone who can't vote for Obama think about voting in protest for Cynthia McKinney, and then writing to Howard (Lost His Mind) Dean and telling him why.

Cue the song "Didn't We Almost Have It All" as Obama exits, stage left...or right, depending on if he's flipping or flopping on that particular day. "

There is no way I trust Obama and the only way many in MI would vote for him is if he choose Clinton for VP.
If he dosen't choose her, I will vote for McCain, he could do better if he would happen to have her as VP he would be in in a min.
I also believe if she was on the ticket other then DEM. or REP. she would win, she is really the best choice.

I too lived in Michigan. Studied economics at Macomb County.

Since Republicans took office in 2001, Michigan's economy sank to Depression levels. The rest of the country is just beginning to catch up.

Republicans began diverting aid from manufacturing in our state to big oil, pharmaceuticals, weaponry and war carriers in foreign countries. And this started before 9/11. Immediately after 9/11, do you recall how many companies started laying off people?

Michigan leaders pleaded with the Republican administration for a little levity. DENIED! One of Michigan's main adversaries was John McCain.

Now, I don't know about your neighborhood, but there are several newly constructed homes that have never been occupied in mine. Small business after small business has had to close.

Please read McCain's plan for the US economy, then decide if you'll continue to "stand by (your) choice." "

Mccain has flip flopped on every single issue in the last two months!

He has voted with Bush 95% of the time.

Even in Arizona, his support is much lower than expected.

It is pathetic and sad that you are all so short sighted because Hillary lost the nomination race fair and square.

Your support of Mccain is truly sad and pathetic. Atleast do the country a favor and NOT vote at all! We cannot live with another 4 or 8 years of Bush policies. "

I laughed so hard at your posts. "Hillarys supporters(over 18 milions) are not stupid". Let's see, none of your sentences really make sense, almost everything is spelled wrong and you we are supposed to take your "enlightened" opinion seriously? Are you for real?

I was not initially an Obama supporter, but I am smart enough to put my vote behind the person who is closest in platform to my preferred candidate. I am not crying like a child and I am voting on the ISSUES. Maybe you have heard of those?

Just remember, if you screw this election up there will be NO CHANCE for Hillary in 2012. (These 18 million voters won't forget your betrayal).

Now I think Hillary is a very smart woman who ran a very dumb campaign. Period. She did not capitalize on what her strengths were and she has no one to blame for that but herself.

Please get over your bitterness and if you feel the need to vote for the opposite of what Hillary's platform was, then just stay at home and gripe with the other bitter angry women. You are giving the rest of us women a bad name! "

Imagine what the world would have been like if Goldwater was elected as president in 1964 and Johnson didn't serve from 1964-1968. Obama is a dreamer and both Clinton and McCain are pragmatists as well as moderates. When asked questions McCain at least gives a straight answer, translating Obama's true feelings is like deciphering the Rosetta Stone. Whether we like it or not, McCain is more of a true reflection of the socially conservative and economical leanings of our area. Obama is looking like he's moving toward being a religious crackpot, after being in that debate, and he appears daily to be getting closer and closer to the conservative side. In general, he looks like he's trying really hard to be McCain, and his speeches look like he's uncertain with all those pauses. His poll numbers are tanking like a lead balloon. He should fire his advisors, because they're following the exact playbook of the past defeats. Soon he's going to be picking one of the most boring people to be his V.P., which won't raise his poll numbers at all. By the end of September Obama and Mc Cain will look like they're the same thing. So, why not vote for the original, and vote for McCain.
After November I will be embarrassed to be known as a Democrat. Thank you Democratic Party for always finding a way to snatch defeat from the easiest victory ever. At the very least I hope you finally throw away your playbook for good, because if it doesn't work in the worst economic times it won't work at all. "

It doesn't surprise me one bit that Doherty(McGregor), Brazil, are involved in this PERCEIVED "turncoat " event. This is their way to dominate the Republican Party to advance Doherty politically in the future. We don't need Mayor Chris Doherty as a Lt. Govenor in PA. The timing of this event couldn't be more perfect, considering the health of Lt Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll. What the group has done to politics in the Scranton area is a disgrace. I hope this is gets out on a National Level. This is a disgrace that they would treat the Democratic endorsed Presidential candidate in this manner. It is a disgrace that they would meet in this style. What a misstep by just one day! When Mayor Christopher A Doherty didn't like the Democratic committee endorsed School Board slate, he endorsed his own. It completely backfired. History always repeats itself somewhere. He does have a lot in common with Hillary Clinton. Both like to spend other people's money. Both ratchet up the debt and expect others to pay it off. Scranton is known as a dying town under this Mayors lack of leadership, vision and plan. I can only imagine how we will be written up now. This is a classic Doherty recipe that flopped. Barack Obama, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President, first met Wright and joined his church in the 1980s, while he was working as a community organizer in Chicago before attending Harvard Law School. Wright officiated at the wedding ceremony of Barack and Michelle Obama, as well as their children's baptism. The title of Obama's memoir, The Audacity of Hope, was inspired by one of Wright's sermons.

Wright was scheduled to give the public invocation before Obama's presidential announcement, but Obama withdrew the invitation the night before the event. Wright wrote a rebuttal letter to the editor disputing the characterization of the account as reported in an article in The New York Times.

In 2007 Wright was appointed to Barack Obama's African American Religious Leadership Committee, a group of over 170 national black religious leaders who supported Obama's bid for the Democratic nomination; however, it was announced in March 2008 that Wright was no longer serving as a member of this group.

On May 31, 2008, Obama announced that he had resigned from his membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ, of which Wright had previously served as pastor. "

" I was disappointed to read this article. I hate that we are still referring to each other as Obama or HRC supporters or slurs of these labels. It has been months. We should be Dems not thems. There's no Romney Republicans for goodness sake. This would be a nothing story if we saw Sen Hillary stumpping with passion. Her speeches are mechanical and passionless. Bill leaves me speechless. And her key serrogates are employed by FOX! She even referred to Obama as her opponent while stumping in Florida this week (oops.. paging Dr. Freud). These things may be circumstantial evidence and innocent in isolation, but all of them together point to something more troubling. I am crazy enough to think that Obama will win without all of the Clinton's support, but he can blow McCain away with their help. If she can not help, then please at least do no harm. The fact is Mc Cain has not overtaken Obama in the national polls in 2 months ( a life time in politics). Even the narrowing polls was not Mc Cain coming up, but Obama coming down. He has always gone down on Fridays anyway.
He showed his worse showing the week. Yes he needs to fight harder and smarter. Yes I'm frustrated that McCain has constantly placed his neck on the chopping block without receiving fatal blows, but I believe that the Obama campaign that beat THE Clintons can beat Mr. noun verb and POW.
People say they vote on issues, but people really vote their heart. They vote on who they perceive a person to be. So some Hillary Dems will hate Obama all their days inventing greivances in their minds or blaming the sins of the media on him or scolding him for not coming to the defense of a woman (which is sexist if you think about it). Others would have never voted for him because they are the same 10% of Democrats that always vote Republican in the Fall. The demographics of those that who have done so in previous elections (White, low income working class) were the ones that supported Hillary in large part. So that leaves those who are hurt enough to look in McCain's way, but has not crossed over. If he can win these, His base will expand. If Obama win 6% of the nation come November, pollsters say that it will be an electoral land slide. Since BO is Black I would prefer a bigger gap to easily win the electoral college. For those supporting Obama let's try to get at least one new voter to the polls to make up for the Hillary vote that will never come. They need their to time heal or whatever, but let's not let this time pass us by.
