Using their knowledge about student learning needs and behaviors as a basis for establishing performance expectations, effective teachers establish a learning community that encourages and nurtures academic and social development. Students learn more effectively when they feel they are valued members of a learning community. Effective teachers communicate expectations in a way that is clearly understood by students and are consistent in maintaining the academic and behavioral standards they have established.
