My Chemical Romance march 'aiming for 1,000 protestors'

Emo fans' stand against press misrepresentation grows

My Chemical Romance fans' march against The Daily Mail next weekend (May 31) could attract up to a thousand protestors, says the organisers.

As previously reported, fans of the band are set to march in London to protest against press misrepresentation of their heroes, especially in The Daily Mail.

Anni Smith, who only began to organise the march last Friday (May 16), told NME.COM: "At my last check there were 426 entries on the list, but I'm expecting to have at least 500 by tomorrow evening (May 24). [The police] are asking for numbers and I'm thinking maybe I should say a thousand."

Explaining that the march is "100% for My Chemical Romance" rather than emo music in general, Smith said: "The [Daily Mail's] words 'suicide cult' really stand out for me, because it's just so far from the truth. As a fanbase it's such an insult 'cause we fight so hard and so many of us suffer from depression, and we fight everyday to ward it off.

"The way [many teenagers are] fighting it is with My Chemical Romance's help and it's just such an insult to tell us that the last thing we have to hold on to and the last thing that's keeping us alive is killing us, because it's not."

Smith directly attacked the Daily Mail's suggestion that the emo group promotes suicide and self-harm, saying: "My Chemical Romance is my whole life and I take it very seriously, but at the same time the message that we're taking seriously isn't about death and how you should die and killing yourself and all that, it's about how you should love life and experience every moment that you can."

The march, set to begin at Hyde Park's West Pond in central London, takes place on the afternoon of May 31.

The hole Emo thing is really beginning to fuck me off, I love many of the pop punk kinda bands like MCR and Taking Back Sunday, The Used, and other mainstream artists along those lines, but I don't consider them Emo, or emotive hardcore or emotional or whatever It actually stands for, basically they are punk rock. There songs are about death and the afterlife and other such subjects, so how there fans can say these subjects saved there lives I don’t know. The way its portrayed in general in the media is stupid, you get the daily mail coming up with complete crap every few weeks about My Chemical Romance being a death cult – no its many of the fans being idiots with all this MCR saved my life bollocks, I very much doubt they did and seeming as its almost every stupid 12 year old black parade listening idiot that says that very line. People need to get it in there head they are just a band, they are just normal people who write songs and perform them, they might have had chart success and all that but there nothing special! I think there great but seriously I think both the media and the fans need to grow up and move away from all the Emo cult rubbish.

I have to say I regret for the girl, who have that need to finish her life being so young, but I'm sorry too about the band. It must be awful when someone take your music or your art like an excuse to comit suicide.

I kind of agree with underclasshero. Most people watch the video diary and assume that mcr saved their life even though they are 11 or 12. But there are some cases where someone was suicidal and mcr gave them hope. I'm not saying that without mcr i would kill myself. I'm just saying that their message is to live ur life to the fullest and that they have saved some lives, but a lot of fans are just posers in that aspect.

I am a very big fan of MCR... They are not emo and do not promote or glorify death... They offer hope and ispiration to many people who are depressed and help them to overcome that depression and see that there is more to live for... I would not kill myself is MCR were to stop making music/split up but there would be a part of my life that wouldn't be the same.. it is not their fault that Hannah (RIP) killed herself and they did not tell or to do it... If she did get the wrong idea from the songs then that is not MCR's fault. They are extremely anti-emo and only wish to help their fans. MCR FOR EVER
