Bruce Bowen: Dirtiest player since John Stockton?

    Posted by Eric | April 11, 2008 .

So many analysts and bloggers have been talking defense lately. We’re coming up on the playoffs, and the focus is starting to shift from Lebron and Kobe’s 40 point games to good lock down defense and winning. John Hollinger’s All-Defense article today had his picks for his All-Defense team. I was happy to see Shane Battier getting some run, and almost as happy to see someone edge out Bruce Bowen, the man that may be the dirtiest player in the NBA today.

A video posted today on Odenized of Bruce Bowen cheap shotting Amare Stoudemire. As everyone who has any idea who Bruce Bowen knows, this isn’t that surprising, but I decided to take a quick run through Youtube and see what else I could come up with.

players like this are lucky that people like me aren’t NBA officials. i have an eye for things like this, and id definately have one of the highest foul counts in the league, and probably THE highest technical count. though then i might be accused of fixing spreads =P

    2. ty April 11, 2008 8:07 am

haha the wally szerbiak kick looks like something out of a kickboxer movie or something.

bruce bowen is a pussy just like stockton was, and karl malone. these guys hit hard and then act like they didnt do anything. real men do it like the pistons of the early ninties (when isiah thomas wasnt a huge douche) and dennis rodman. they were men about it. no cheap shots, just manly confrontations.

that reminds me, hockey playoffs have started. ill probably blog on it later.

Stockton may have made some cheap shots (who doesn’t), but Bowen is in a league all by himself and needs to be banned from the game.

    4. Eric April 11, 2008 11:41 pm

@Sam - I actually agree with you. After watching the videos, I realized that Stockton may have been a cheater and a flopper, but Bowen is out there trying to hurt people.

    5. SSSS April 13, 2008 5:09 am

THIS MAN IS VICIOUS,IT SEEMS STRANGE THE NBA HASNT DONE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS .

    6. Sean April 15, 2008 5:02 am

Yeah, unlike most “cheap shotters”, Bowen is out to hurt players. Let’s see how much of this we get during the playoffs.

P.S. - John Stockton is still a douche bag.

    7. Sean April 15, 2008 5:03 am

      So is Karl Malone.

    8. Chris Rice April 17, 2008 10:36 am

Bowen is a shining example of a dirty player. The guy moves his body in position to hurt someone (the heel kick to Stoudemire is ridiculous) and then immediately puts his hands up in the air to tell everyone “What? Me?” That’s the oldest way that people know that you’re lying: you’re the first to claim innocence. I have no clue as to why he hasn’t been suspended based on the Stoudemire play. Unreal.

    9. Desperado May 13, 2008 12:48 am

So in how many years in the league and you could only find eight instances of Bowen “intentionally” hurting anyone? Please thats just selective sampling and could be done for any defensive player in the league. And the fact that Bowen never gets techs or flagrants even when refs try to zero in on his “antics” shows how upstanding his defense is. The guy grabs and clutches and uses his feet to be a great defender but that is all he is, a great defender. If anything the guy has been robbed his entire career of several DPOY awards and that is just sad.

And note the Chris Paul incident is where CP3 trys to intentionally hit Bowen in the nuts something he has a history of. The Wally incident is absurd and was completely unintentional.

    10. Steve May 13, 2008 2:19 am

First three videos just look like physical basketball, accidents even.

The Ray Allen one, ok, that was kinda cheap, but it was just a “fuck you” tap after a heavy play.

The only video on here that supports your argument is the Szcerbiak one.

Undercutting is “discouraged” by the NBA, but they haven’t regulated against it (i.e. creating a specific penalty for it).

Basketball has been pussified enough since the 1980’s, quit crying about physical plays. It would be a shame to see 7′ tall players acting like soccer fags, wincing and feigning injury to draw fouls. Oh wait, some of them already do.

    11. chris May 13, 2008 3:21 am

These two guys can say all they want in defense of Bowen. The fact that you would be hard pressed to find anybody, outside of Spurs fans, to would defend him says plenty.

Oh and this argument about the game being “pussified” is ridiculous. There is a difference between physical play and dirty play. Bowen doesn’t know the difference and apparently neither do you.

Besides, just because you are all nostalgic for the Bad Boys and Bill Laimbeer doesn’t mean that form of the NBA is superior to todays. If you want bodies on the ground go watch the AFL, that shits going right now I think.

    12. Desperado May 13, 2008 10:55 am

Lmao at Chris. The guy is always on the all defensive team, if he were just dirty.
      1) Coaches who study the game tape more than anyone would never vote for him.
      2) If he just layed people out he would average more than 2.3 fouls a game.
      3) He has played 793 games and only been ejected once.
      4) If Bowen were truly dirty he would have more than 31 technical fouls in his entire career.
      5) If Bowen were truly dirty he would have more than 8 flagrant fouls in his entire career.

Sorry to break it to you but Bowen ain’t dirty. If you take the time to actually look at the way he plays the game you will see a hard nosed defender that works his ass off every possession as if his paycheck depends on his ability to stay in front of the other teams best player, which it literally does.

But you can hate on the guy all you want. Just shows a jealousy and a lack of respect for the blue collar player who gets under your whiny star’s skin and drives him to a 4/20 fga game.

    13. desperadoisaCENSORED May 13, 2008 2:33 pm

desperado clearly hasnt played basketball ever. putting your foot under someone shooting a jump shot clearly shows your trying to sprain their ankle. being dirty doesnt mean you have to get technicals or flagrants; it just means you try to hurt a player without the refs seeing it or calling. so his near perfect record along with these videos clearly show that he is trying to intentionally hurt players while not getting caught. plus hes only really played 7 years in the league; he was drafted in 93 and didnt really play until he got to the spurs in 01, 8 years later. he sucks, he a dbag and hes dirty.

    14. bowenkicksass May 13, 2008 4:17 pm

What a bunch of cry babyies. Obviously as a Spurs fan I am biased but if he is such a dirty player it is strange that he is voted defensive player of the year almost annually. A lot of these videos are some ticky tack baby shit. The one on Wally is the only one that makes a serious case. I have a feeling the post was done by a Suns fan who is crying because they could never get into the championship round with all that talent. Shaq awesome pickup really helped the suns out a lot hahaha.

    15. Eric May 13, 2008 4:27 pm

I assure you that I’m not a spurs fan. I’m a life long Rockets fan, and he definitely hasn’t gotten the better of us. The fact is that Bowen is making a career of sneaky and underhanded plays that are 100% dirty. There is no doubt when watching him that he stays aware of the ref’s field of vision at all times, and takes his shots when he can. The move where he sticks his feet under jump shooters as they are coming down can not be defended. He has repeatedly injured players doing it, and from what I’ve been told, the NBA is reviewing the rules regarding it this off-season. You can see that he is not trying to defend the shot at all. As the player is above him he goes under them with his feet - can you explain why he would do this other than to injure another player? I’m not saying Bowen isn’t a good defender, but he is also dirty. Defending that just makes you look even more biased than me picking the Rockets to win the Finals. At least I knew when I picked them that it was me being a homer, you just seem deluded.

    16. Desperado May 13, 2008 11:50 pm

Anyone who takes the time to watch a full game of just watching Bowen will come to appreciate what he does. Tonight watch what Bowen does to Peja. Don’t take your eyes off Bowen, and you won’t see a dirty player. What you will see is a tenacious player that constantly moves his feet and fights to be in the right position. If you look carefully at the screens the Hornets will run Peja through watch how Bowen fights through those screens. It’s the one thing he does that is even remotely dirty, he will grab Peja on the elbow to slow him down. It’s a clutch move that must be frustrating as hell for the opposing player, but it’s never done to injure a player nor could it.

The kicking his feet out under a shooter is purely a selective viewing of history. And it happens all of the time for every player, Bowen just gets scrutinized for something that happens a dozen times every game. The only persons that ever twisted an ankle were Vince Carter and Jamal Crawford, and they weren’t exactly threats to the Spurs winning ever. Two incidents in 793 games.

Take a step away from blind homerism and you will see a player that consistently holds MVP candidates (from Kobe to Dirk) to below their average numbers, and a player that has been consistently robbed of a much deserved Defensive player of the year award.

    17. WTF May 14, 2008 6:33 am

Are you guys kidding me….??!!!! One underhanded play in a season is completely acceptable, two is wrong, three is really pushing the barrier between play and street play, and anything beyond should be severely frowned upon!!! I don’t care if you are a spurs fan or not. Sure, Spurs fans are all…thank god we have him or I’d be pissed…but those of us out there don’t have him and are……….PISSED! I’m from Minnesota and before you go joking about the wolves dispicable record this season let me first point out that I do no back a single Minnesota team. NFL is 49ers…yeah shut-up……baseball is many (can’t pick a favorite)…….and yes…NBA is the Sun’s! But, after all the cheap shots, injuries, and intentional fouls…who is the bad team? The Sun’s are one of the lowest teams overall in number of fouls. I wonder why. None-the-less, I don’t think Bowen is the worst but I certainly think his playing ability needs to be carefully reviewed before he is allowed to continue to play professional basketball on a highly ranked team for large amounts of money!!!

    18. Joe May 14, 2008 7:14 am

Hey Desperado, nobody was dissing on Bowen’s defensive skills. Obviously he is a good defender, however he is also the dirtiest defender in the league by far. The stuff he does is intentional and extremely dirty. I think these videos show enough, and you cannot rightfully defend him

    19. vince May 27, 2008 4:41 pm

This guy is a BUG!!! he need a disciplinary action from the commissioner, he’s a great defensive player but, doing something unnecessary this man needs to be banned from playing!!!!

    20. notgood4u September 21, 2008 2:38 pm

You missed the one against Vince Carter.Which took him out for several months back in the day…It was brutal
