PS3 Worst Reviewed Launch Ever?
We find out which modern console really came with the worst games.

We all got excited when the
PS3s finally arrived. But that initial high wore off in shockingly short order. As talk circulated around the office from everyone playing the games for reviews it became clear that beyond
Resistance, the launch lineup dropped off pretty sharply. It didn't take long for the gut feeling to develop that PS3 might just have the worst reviewed set of launch games in modern videogame history.
And then the Wii's arrived. While the response wasn't quite as pronounced, it was equally obvious that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess stood head-and-shoulders above the rest of the offerings. But surely, the Wii, with a Zelda game, couldn't be the worst reviewed launch lineup...could it?
We had to know.
So, we decided to dig in and find out. Deciding how far back to go was pretty easy. The launch of the original PlayStation started the modern era of videogames, and it seemed only fitting to begin there in light of its third descendent sparking our curiosity. And while it could be argued that strictly speaking it began with Sega's Saturn, it arrived with only one launch game, making comparison seem unbalanced. That same problem struck the N64, which arrived in North America with only two games. We chose to keep it in the study for the sake of continuity.
That made our full lineup PlayStation (Sept. 1995), Nintendo 64 (Sept. 1996), Dreamcast (Sept. 1999), Playstation 2 (Oct. 2000), GameCube (Nov. 2001), Xbox (Nov. 2001), Xbox 360 (Nov. 2005), PS3 (Nov. 2006), and Wii (Nov. 2006).
And the loser is...
As it turns out a Sony console did indeed have the worst reviewed crop of launch games, but not the one we thought. The original PlayStation holds the title, with the nine (out of 12 release games for which Gamerankings has a composite score) racking up a lackluster 70.4 average score. Looking at the games, and remembering the launch, it makes sense. There wasn't a true standout among them. Warhawk topped the list, along with Battle Arena Toshinden, and Ridge Racer. And for as many fond memories as it has, Twisted Metal only managed a disappointing 66.9 average.
Neither was there a big winner. Turns out, when you stack them all up against each other all the launches have averaged in the 70's. Well, except N64, but it's hard to compare it because it only had two games at launch, and one of them was Super Mario 64. For all the others, launch lineups have numbered in the teens, with PlayStaion 2 topping the list with close to 30 games at launch.
And not only isn't PlayStaion 3 the worst reviewed launch lineup in recent memory, it's not even the worst in this latest "next-gen" round of launches. Believe it or not, that distinction goes to the Wii, despite having Zelda. Its 20 games combined for a 71.3 average, making it actually the second worst launch next to the PlayStaion. With PS3 coming in at 73.4, that gave the crown to Xbox 360, which averaged 77.3 for its launch library.
Averages are just that, though, and don't tell you much about the best games that accompanied the launches. And the best of the batch wasn't a surprise, but it wasn't a Nintendo game either. Soul Caliber for the Dreamcast, with an average of 96.4 just barely squeaks out the win over the Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess for Wii. At the other end of the spectrum, both Wii and PS3 share the worst stinkers with Happy Feet for Wii coming in at a 45 and Gundam: Crossfire at the very bottom with its 34.8.

[How we did this: We began with the list of launch titles available from wikipedia. From there we used press releases and retailer launch lists to fill out the rest as best as possible. Aggregate review scores are those listed at gamerankings.com]

Lol. Idc. Ps3 in my mind has the worst launch titles EVER. Wii rocks and will rock forever. Lol at least it doesn't overheat and isnt heat sensored (add those two together) ps3=POOP WII WILL LIVE FOREVER!
The average score is imho quite unusable for comparison measures alone. I.e. ps2 delivers 29 games at an average of 73.7, compared to ps3 with only 13 games, with an average of 73.4. Obviously ps2 did a much better job. Also, the fact that gundam is out on ps3 isn't worse than it not being out, although this comparison claims so (and someone may argue me on this one, I know it looks terrible). A typical consumer is probably interested in 2-3 games together with his console at launch. I would say that the top 5 (or 3 or 4 or whatever) games should have a much larger weighting than the rest, because it's these top games that make the real launch lineup for most guys. Also, it should somehow take into account the number of games in some way, freedom of choice obviously is a good thing.
So, my recommendation for comparison measures would be:
-top five games count 3 times as much as the rest of the games for the average score.
-# of games with average score above 70 should be given (this is the most )
-# games in total could be given
-Games with average score below ~60 shouldn't be taken into account in the averaging (they do not effect the launch in any way)
Finally, very interesting to see how little significance this lineup presumeably have with the future success of the console. I thought it had much more significance! Dreamcast having the best launch game ever, and we all know where that one ended up, nowhere!

I'm having so many hardware issues, i'm returning it.
Zelda is an epic adventure / action game with certain RPG elements, and sometimes platform elements. It's the perfect mix. That's why is that good.
Like Metroid Prime, it's not a first person shooter per se. Nintendo likes to mix various elements so you get the best of both worlds. That's why those games are masterpieces.

In my opinion i believe that both the 360 and PS3 Launches were nothing special. Sure Most of the PS3 game were already on the 360, but most Sony fans don't own a 360 so this doesn't mean anything to them.
But yes the PS2 launch was bad, i remember playing some shit game called "X Squad" or something like that..........................
Japanese RPGs are fun, thats what keeps the Gameboys flowing.......and it is also why the PSP isn't too popular (because it doesn't have any). Last time i check Zelda was a Japanese RPG (action RPG, the best kind).

and ALL of those games, but one, are already on the 360. ps3's launch is total crap. yes i would call it the worst launch, scratch that, the ps2 was prolly worse. im swear to god im not joking when i say this, but i remember waiting in line, yes 12 hours, at walmart for my ps2 (first in line BTW), and when it came time for everyone to pick the games that they wanted, i literally heard people saying, "theres really nothing here at all, all these games suck.". so maybe ps2 wins, but ps3 is close. all i bought with my ps2 launch was was....DARK CLOUD I THINK IT WAS LOL GROSS. i think thats what it was. of course the games got better in time. i got one for mgs2 mainly.
360's launch smokes them both. yeah you mentioned quake4, which ruled, but i bought that for my pc instead. yeah good game. gave doom3 a run for its money.

I don't hate Sony fans. I have friends that are Sony fans. I don't have a problem with that. I even had the PS1 and PS2. I just hate Sony and its attitude. I personally believe that the Wii had the best Line up, i mean they did what Microsoft and Sony where too stupid to do. They released their systems most popular game at launch (ZELDA). Now if Mircosoft would have had Halo 3 ready for launch that would have been insane, and If Sony had Metal Gear Solid 4 ready that too would have been great! But microsoft and sony aren't as smart..........
As for the 360 and PS3 launch titles, they both are not very impressive. I remember playing "AMPED 3" and it sucked.........it was basically the same as "AMPED 2" but with smoother graphics.........If you look closely the tread on the Skidoo doesn't even move while you drive it.
The only games i liked on the 360 launch were:

Quake 4
Call of duty 2
Condemned
and the games i like on the PS3 launch are:
Resistance
NFS: Carbon
Fight Night 3
Call of Duty 3
Tony Hawks Project 8
I would say the best launch lineup was the Sega Dreamcast. Sould Calibur was an absolute must buy game. It was leagues ahead of its time from a technological standpoint, and it played flawlessly. Also, Sonic Adventure was great. It hasn't aged too well, but at the time it was stunning. On top of that, other games like House of the Dead 2, Marvel vs. Capcom, Power Stone, and NFL 2K were all worthy of buying. In my book, the Dreamcast launch lineup remains the best ever.
Sorry but the launch games did not impress me..I don't really like 1st Person shooters unless there Original!..And Resistance Fall Of Man is Zzzzzzz....

@dragon, really? well i know project64 doesnt play some games, but games like 007,pd,marios,zeldas,conker,etc. work MORE than perfect. but n64 is not as easy to emulate apparently.
zNES or Jnes whater its called, works more than good too. all of the snes games run better than normal and in HD resolutions with 32 bit color too, like project64. there are options to make text and edges look very smooth,etc. lots of stuff. it really looks amazing to see 2d mario and link look this good.
yeah that classic controller looks cool, but u can just plug your GC controller into the wii too. but nothing can beat using an xbox1 or 360 pad on a pc emulator tho.
(p.s. i own all of these games so backups are legal 1up. just incase)
@kawasaki, well considering that the 360 can use more video ram than the ps3, im not sure what theyre going to use with their 100 gig super x-ray disks besides store more CG in FF. but lets see what happens.

Wouldn't including games like Happy Feet and Shrek make this a little unfair since just about everybody knows they suck? You would need to compare the ratio of good games to bad, the amount of games released, and diversity to get a good measure on launch quality. Oh, and get a count on glitches and launch recalls as well.

Bottom line is this: Yeah, it looks like the PS3 has a pretty crappy launch. Most anyone can agree with that. But...uh....pretty much all of the systems listed here seem to have pretty sub-par collective launch scores. Saying that the PS3 is the worst launch is like saying that their KIA is the crappiest car out of all of the rest of the console's KIA's. it APPEARS that the PS1 had the worst console launch review in modern gaming - and look where it ended up.
I don't know who's going to come out on top with this generation, but trying to predict a console's demise based on a launch is an act devoid of logic. For some reason, Xbox fanboys seem to be the most guilty of this - even moreso than the Sony fantards.

All you have to do is compare the amount of time and money that went into the top games with those of the lowest games. Of course Twilight Princess scored high, the whole damn company poured its soul into it for years. I doubt anyone did that for Happy Feet. *lol* Besides, launch means nothing. We all know that the best games usually come out just before the system calls it quits (FFVII being a rare exception).

I don't hate Jazz at all. There's no way and nothing for what I can hate it. Thanks God that good music like it exists to compensate all the shit that young people listens lately. I'm just not attracted to it with a few exceptions. I just prefer other type of things but respect Jazz immensely. And same goes for Classical Music.

Thanx for the old news, yes old. Ted Price, CEO of Insomniac, had already stated that Resistance would be around the 17-22 mark.
FYI the "padding" that you speak of has been around since the PS1 days. Other then using it for speed reasons it would also contain encryption data.
Just having this masterpiece called Zelda The Twilight Princess makes it a winner at launch. Also Rayman and Super Monkey Ball are amazing and addictive party games.

The systems are brand new and developers have yet to really dig into the consoles capabilities. Take a look at what launches came out without a hitch and I'm sure you'll notice that out of the three next-gen systems, Wii came out on top with no detrimental problems, PS3 second with some backwards compatibility and HD compatibility issues, and lastly, 360 with it's power source problems.

What I can see with these numbers is pretty much what I saw for every system launch: Since all the release launches average nearly the same score, it's safe to say that all systems pretty much suck at launch.
Save yourself the hurt of suckage and just wait until real games actually come out for the new systems before considering on owning one.
Besides, number crunching is for wusses. I'll follow Leroy Jenkins' example for this one!
Even with the added functionality it couldn't help its launch from sucking.
Xbox 360 had more diverse selection. Some ugly ports tho like Gun and Tony Hawk.
PS3 lineup is just straight garbage.
1up hasn't reported this yet, but Resistence for the PS3, as Sony & Insomniac claims, uses 22 GB of data, justfying its Blu-Ray format, claiming its necessary for next-gen gaming. Well, joystiq has a veryyyyyyyy interesting article detailing how most of the data on the disk is 'padding files', used to push data to the begning of the disk to make retriving data off disks faster. Blu-Ray is suppose to have equal retrival times through out the entire disk, making 'padding' unecessary. So, 17.75 GB of data on the Blu-Ray disk out of the 22 GB total used for Resistance is crap! I don't own any next gen systems yet, but Sony is doing its best to sell me an XBOX and Wii!

Yes man, I own a 360 too, since launch day. It rules! And yes, if you are in 42 hours of Zelda you will know by now how hard it rules. It owns everything. It's one of the best games in history. And it plays fantastic with the Wii Remote. What do you think? Because Dragon is saying that it won't, but I that own it, can tell that it does, so I would like to know what do you think. And when I beat it I was so amazed by its majestuosity that I'm starting it all over again.

The problem is that games for the Wii and the ps3 are still getting reviewed by people. Pleny of people still have to review most of these games making it irelevant. Do another one of these articles in about a month.

There are a lot of factors that determine the success of a launch, not only the average review of launch games. The PS3 launch was such a joke. At my local Best Buy, about 30 people were lined up to buy one, and all but ONE planned to sell it on eBay. Thanks alot, Sony.

people are going to laugh when 360 did bad to at launch like.. overheating problems, not enough consoles at launch... but the ps3 had the same problems.. well the overheating issue is not fully true.. that gundam game is the best selling game for the ps3 in japan.. they like that game.. so even if it did get a bad rating.. it still was the best sold game for the ps3 at launch.. but just give the ps3 longer like the 360 it would make up for what it lacked.. and look at the 360 now.. couldnt been ne better..
